2017 GSM Roofing Great Roof Giveaway Winners

Lancaster Early Education Center $20,000.

It’s that time of year again when GSM Roofing, is giving back to the community and helping Lancaster County nonprofits repair or replace their aging rooftops.

The contest, which kicked off in June, is designed to meet the overwhelming needs of Lancaster County’s nonprofit community. In all, five nonprofit organizations received an award from GSM Roofing, and the Gooding Group Foundation, for a total of $37,300 in prizes.

The winners of the 2017 Great Roof Giveaway were announced Friday, September 15, 2017, during GSM’s annual customer appreciation luncheon at Foxchase Golf Club in Steven, PA.

“Each year during our Great Roof Giveaway we hear from amazing nonprofit organizations that are doing wonderful things for the community; making it challenging to choose a top winner.  What stood out to us the most this year were not the roofs, but the blocks. The Lancaster Early Education Center is forced to close their block room each time that it rains due to roof leaks. We don’t want roof leaks to stand in the way of children learning and playing.” – Reed Gooding, GSM Roofing President

Lancaster Early Education Center was selected as the top winner for their video entry and the wonderful care and education that they provide for children from low-income working families. They were awarded $20,000 towards their “Expanding Our Footprint” capital campaign which includes designs for a vegetative roofing system.

The other award recipients were as follows:

  • Zion’s Reformed UCC, Ephrata, PA – $4,300, for roof replacement an entrance roof
  • Hempfield Area Rec Commission, Landisville, PA – $4,000 for leak investigation and repairs over their tennis courts
  • Real Life Church of God, East Petersburg,  PA – $4,000 for leak investigation and roof repairs
  • Boys and Girls Club, Lancaster, PA – $5,000 toward their Capital Campaign for the Southeast Lancaster Clubhouse

The roof repairs will take place over the course of the next 1 – 3 months.

To enter the contest, nonprofits submitted an image or video on the GSM Roofing Facebook page showing the building in need of repair. Then they filled out an online entry form detailing the need and the organization’s impact to the community. The GSM Roofing Great Roof Giveaway judging panel conducted interviews and site visits as part of the selection process.

I did get a chance to inspect the roof of this church last week. There was no damage to the roof, it is actually in quite good condition since it was installed in the late 80's or early 90's. The leaks they are experiencing are at the flashing transitions to the stone masonry and one at a brick masonry chimney.

But I did want to tell you that I was very impressed with Austin, the young fellow that ran the lift for me. I am not sure I have ever had such a smooth and accurately-placed ride. It wasn't the highest roof I ever had to look at, and maybe the equipment rental was newer, but still, it was refreshing to see the competence of that young fellow.
